There were few entrants into the solid state storage arena at the beginning and STEC was the sole supplier of SSDs in high performance enterprise storage market, due to its unique architecture which allowed the storage device to perform at 100 times the speed of its nearest competitor. In-house development was an approach employed as STEC created its own proprietary controller, manufacturing and testing technology. This money-saving strategy saved millions. In 2009, after 19 years STEC had a market capitalization of over 2 billion and was eventually sold in 2013 to Western Digital.

Prior to starting STEC, Mark Moshayedi enjoyed considerable success as an electrical engineer. With credentials from the University of California at Irvine, he gained initial experience working for Texas Instruments in the early 1980s. As he transitioned into an area application engineering role for Fujitsu Micro, he concurrently took classes at nearby Pepperdine University. He completed his MBA in 1985.

After leaving Fujitsu Micro, Mr. Moshayedi worked for Sony in the semiconductor industry before turning to data storage for many years. His work with solid state drives and data storage afforded him opportunities to work nationally and internationally, which became central to his new company MSM Global Ventures in 2013.
